Chain Link Materials Calculator

Calculate exact materials
for your chain link fence.

A free chain link fence materials calculator from ProLink Supply — the West Coast’s premium fencing supplier. Build a complete bill of materials (BOM) with posts, mesh, rails, fittings, and gates. Choose Finish Type (Galvanized or Black) first, then pick mesh gauge and selvage (KK / BK / BB). In Framework Sizes, pick size + pipe material (16TU / 20WT / 40WT / Sched40) for Top Rail, Line Posts, End Posts, Corner Posts, and Gate Posts. Set each gate's height, width, and frame under Gates. Toggle 3-strand barbed wire top with 45° or 90° arms in the options. Everything flows into the BOM — export CSV, print PDF, or email a quote.

Bill of Materials — items
PART # MATERIAL / DESCRIPTION QTY UNIT
Quantities calculated using industry-standard 10 ft spacing, the waste/overage % entered above, and typical fittings per post.
Calculation assumptions & rules
• Fabric length = total fence length + waste (gate widths are separate and do not reduce fabric). Rounded UP to the next multiple of 50 ft (mesh sold only in 50 ft rolls — no partials). The BOM QTY for mesh is the amount you will purchase (e.g. 90 ft needed → 100 ft / 2 rolls).
• Posts along the run: ceil(fabric length ÷ spacing) + 1 total slots. Ends and corners fill those slots (each corner replaces a line post). Gate posts are additional at openings. Set corners to 0 for straight line jobs.
• End posts: 1 tension bar, 2 brace bands, and 1 tension band for each foot of fence height, 1 rail end.
• Corner posts: 2 tension bars, 4 brace bands, 2 tension bands for each foot of fence height, 2 rail ends.
• Gate posts: same as end posts — 1 tension bar, 2 brace bands, 1 tension band per foot of fence height, 1 rail end (1 per single swing gate post, 2 drive gate posts per opening).
• Tension bands is 1 per foot height for all posts. Corner posts have 2 sides so it is x2 sides.
• When gates are selected, prefab gate SKUs from Gates.xlsx appear at the bottom of the BOM (single swing = SG prefix, 1 each; double drive = DG prefix, 1 each per opening — both sides included). Gate hardware: standard hinges — per single swing gate 2 post + 2 frame hinges + 1 fork latch; per double drive 4 post + 4 frame hinges + 1 drop rod. Bulldog hinges are set per gate on each gate card (2 per single swing gate, 4 per double drive); they replace post + frame hinges only for that gate. Single swing gates with bulldog require hinge side (left/right, front view). Prefab gate SKU prefers Bulldog-ready variants for drive gates when bulldog is on. Drop rod is 1 per double gate (not doubled).
• Top rail ≈ fabric length + waste, always rounded up to next 21 ft increment. Choose swedged (no sleeve needed) or plain end (adds sleeves, one per connection/joint).
• Fence ties: 1 every 16" along top rail + 1 every 16" per line post height; rounded up to 100s. SKU by line post size: FG1509TIES / FBK1709TIES (1 5/8" & 1 7/8"); FG2309TIES / FBK2309TIES (2 3/8").
• Bottom tension wire (default): length matches mesh qty in BOM. Hog rings only with tension wire (1 per ft, by the pound).
• Bottom rail (instead of wire): removes tension wire + hog rings; adds line posts + 1 bottom rails at spacing length (suffix P). Per bottom rail: 2 rail ends (top rail size). Brace bands sized to post OD: line posts × count, corner posts ×2, end posts × count, gate posts × count (drive ×2).
• Finish (Galv/Black) first. Then per-category: size + material (16TU/20WT/40WT/Sched40) for Top Rail, Line, End, Corner (if used), and Gate (only when gates present). 16ga (16TU) max post size is 2 3/8"; selecting 2 7/8" or larger auto-switches material to 20 WT and removes 16TU. End and Corner sizes/materials are completely independent. Corner selector is ignored for straight runs (0 corners).
• Barbed wire top (optional): 3-strand, choose 45° angled or 90° vertical arms. Adds extension arms (match line post size and quantity) + wire × 3. If selected, extend corner/end/gate post length by 1 ft. Line post eye tops replaced by barb arms (only ends/corners/gates keep dome caps).
• Dome caps: 1 per end, corner, and gate post — each line matches that post size (separate rows when corner and end sizes differ).
• Gate notes field captures special requests (odd sizes, custom types, hardware, etc.). These appear with the BOM and are included in copy/CSV/print outputs.
• Misc. hardware & bolts = tension bands + brace bands, rounded up to nearest 100 (box quantity).
• Edit the Part Number column in the mapping section below. Changes are saved automatically in your browser.

Chain link fence calculator — frequently asked questions

How do I calculate materials for a chain link fence?

Enter total fence length, height, line post spacing, and counts for end posts, corner posts, and gates. The calculator applies industry-standard rules for mesh rolls (50 ft increments), post quantities, top rail (21 ft sticks), tension bands per foot of height, fittings per post, and gate hardware.

What is included in a chain link fence bill of materials?

A complete BOM covers chain link fabric, line/end/corner/gate posts, top rail, tension wire or bottom rail, tension bars, brace bands, tension bands, rail ends, post caps, fence ties, hog rings, gate frames, hinges, latches, drop rods, and optional barbed wire with extension arms.

Can I get ProLink Supply part numbers with my quote?

Yes. Each line item maps to ProLink catalog SKUs. Export the BOM as CSV or PDF, or email a quote request to ProLink offices in Washington, Oregon, or Idaho.

Does the calculator support galvanized and black vinyl chain link?

Yes. Select Galvanized or Black (vinyl-coated) as your finish type. Mesh gauge, selvage, framework sizes, and part numbers update automatically for the selected finish.
